The closest 4-star hotel to the great white stupa
If you are searching for hotels near Ruwanwelisaya — also known as Ruwanweli Maha Seya or Mahathupa — Rajarata Hotel sits 0.8 km from the stupa enclosure, the closest 4-star heritage property to one of Sri Lanka's most sacred sites. The walk takes 6–10 minutes through the temple gardens that border Nuwara Wewa; tuk-tuks from the hotel reception cover the distance in three. Both routes pass directly under the Sri Maha Bodhi precinct, which is itself only 0.6 km from the hotel.
What is the Ruwanwelisaya?
Ruwanwelisaya is one of the world's most revered Buddhist stupas — a 103-metre white dome built by King Dutugemunu in 140 BCE to enshrine relics of the Buddha. When completed it was among the largest brick structures of the ancient world, comparable in scale to the great Egyptian pyramids. The dome is ringed at its base by the famous elephant wall (Hastiprakara) — a frieze of 338 carved elephants, shoulder to shoulder, symbolically supporting the weight of the great chaitya above.
It is one of the eight most sacred sites in Sri Lanka — the Atamasthana — and is in continuous use as a place of pilgrimage. Pilgrims walk the perimeter clockwise (always clockwise), offer white lotus flowers, light coconut-oil lamps, and pray. The stupa is best appreciated at dawn, when the dome glows pink in the first light, and again at dusk when it is fully lit against the dark sky.
What guests should know before visiting
When to go
Dawn (5:30–7:00 AM) is the most atmospheric, with monks chanting and the dome catching first light. Late afternoon (4:00–6:00 PM) is excellent for photography. Vesak full moon (May) and especially Poson full moon (June) bring extraordinary pilgrim crowds — the stupa is wrapped in white cloth and surrounded by thousands of oil lamps.
Dress code
Shoulders and knees covered. White clothing is traditional. Shoes and hats removed at the entrance. Photography is allowed throughout the outer compound but not inside the inner shrine.
Tickets
The Sacred City entrance fee (USD 25 / LKR 7,500 for international visitors) is a single ticket covering Ruwanwelisaya, Sri Maha Bodhi, Thuparamaya, Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiriya. No fee for Sri Lankan nationals.
Walking route from the hotel
The path runs north-east from Rajarata Hotel along Rowing Club Road, past the southern Sri Maha Bodhi entrance, then up to the southern Ruwanwelisaya gate. The whole route is shaded for most of the day and follows the lake's eastern edge. Reception can mark the route on a hand-drawn map and arrange a tuk-tuk if you prefer to ride.
For pilgrim guests
For guests on Buddhist pilgrimage — particularly groups completing the Atamasthana, the eight sacred sites — Rajarata Hotel offers a vegetarian set menu (the Kings Platter), adjacent rooms for groups of 6+, and a 24-hour kitchen for pre-dawn breakfasts before walking to the stupa. The Cultural Triangle pilgrimage route is detailed in our complete Anuradhapura travel guide.
