The closest hotel to the Sacred Bodhi tree

If you are searching for hotels near Sri Maha Bodhi, Rajarata Hotel is geographically the closest 4-star property to the enclosure — sitting 0.6 km from the temple gate, on the western edge of the Sacred City of Anuradhapura. The walk takes about 5–8 minutes; tuk-tuks from the hotel reception cover it in two. For dawn pilgrimage hours — easily the most atmospheric time at the tree — being able to step out of the hotel at 5:30 AM and arrive before the chanting begins is the single biggest reason guests choose Rajarata over properties further from the Sacred City.

What is the Sri Maha Bodhi?

The Sri Maha Bodhi — also written Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi — is a 2,300-year-old sacred fig tree, grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, India. It is the oldest documented human-planted tree in the world, with continuous records of its custodianship since it was planted in 288 BCE by Sanghamitta Theri, daughter of the Indian emperor Ashoka.

The tree itself sits within a tall walled enclosure on a raised platform, surrounded by smaller bodhis grown from its own seedlings. Pilgrims walk the perimeter clockwise, light coconut-oil lamps, and offer white lotus flowers and trays of jasmine to the monks. For Sri Lankan Buddhists this is the most sacred site on the island — and even non-Buddhist visitors are quietly welcomed if they observe the dress code.

What guests should know before visiting

When to go

Dawn (5:30–7:00 AM) is the most atmospheric, with monks chanting and the lamp offerings just beginning. Mid-morning brings the largest pilgrim groups; mid-afternoon is hottest and visually flattest. Full-moon Poya days — especially Vesak in May and Poson in June — see large white-clad pilgrim crowds and an extraordinary atmosphere of devotion. Reservations at the hotel must be made months ahead for Poson weekend.

Dress code

Shoulders and knees must be covered. White clothing is traditional and is what most visitors wear; the hotel can lend a white shawl on request. Shoes and hats are removed at the temple gate. Photography is allowed in the outer courtyards but not inside the inner enclosure.

Tickets

There is no fee for Sri Lankan nationals. International visitors pay a Sacred City entrance fee (currently around USD 25 / LKR 7,500) which is a single ticket covering Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiriya. Tickets are sold at the Sacred City kiosks; the hotel can arrange them in advance.

Walking route from the hotel

The walking path runs north from the hotel along Rowing Club Road, through the temple gardens that border Nuwara Wewa, and into the southern entrance of the Sri Maha Bodhi precinct. The route is shaded for most of the year by the lake-side trees, and is the same path the hotel's tuk-tuk drivers take. Reception will draw you a hand-marked map at check-in.
